I knew a guy who had TONS of experience loading trailers, etc. both boats and flatbed trailers (with tractors) like the one in the pic. He had his Suburban parked in his driveway and was loading his tractor onto his flatbed just like you see in the pic above, and as he had done before. Except this time the trailer lifted the back of the Suburban (as above) and it was on a hill. The whole thing started rolling downhill and before he knew it, he was on a wild ride holding on for his life in the tractor - he couldn’t back off quickly enough, I guess. The truck crashed into his barn, major damage to both, the trailer tongue got mangled, and I’m not sure about the tractor. He was more or less OK but holy hell.

Sometimes extensive experience leads to improper levels of comfort, and causes you to overlook basic safety measures - like wheel chocks, or blocking under the back of the trailer.

We hired a dirt guy to come do some work at our house (I was 12 or so at the time) . This is what happened every time he loaded or unloaded his dozer. He recruited me to sit in the cab of the truck and step on the brake to keep the truck from rolling away. It was an eye-opening ride!

I’ve got a similar story, only in mine the guy loading already lifted the rear of the truck and the tractor rolled off the back when the truck moved forward once already. I told him to chock it or at least put it in 4wd, but he apparently didn’t think it necessary and I was working on other things . Truck ended up jackknifing , damaging the c-pillar and the neck on the trailer, but nothing turned over so everybody came out alright.

You can bet he got shit for it. Especially since it rolled on the first try and he still  decided to try again.

What’s the common sense here? Could anyone really have predicted this? Short of perhaps weighing the patrol...
